[ there's something to the calm that comes after the holiday party that's worth noting. the house settling after months of chaos, but waiting with teeth set on edge. koby might feel a disturbance one day in the early morning. a pulse of something intense - the gale force winds of a storm, a hurricane swallowing the sea, a foundation splitting - then nothing. a torrent of squall and destruction to nothing but absolute, pin drop silence with nothing but the hint of earthy green left in its wake.
it's a few days later when whatever door had been locked opens again, releases the pressure just a little to sit ajar. ]

[It's like a rumble of an approaching storm, right when it's about to hit, when it smells like ozone and rain, when the crackle of lightning builds and builds and -- vanishes, without culminating. Koby's left uneasy, unsure what's just happened, what he'd very nearly averted having hit him like a tidal wave. He chalks it up to the house, the party, the odd emotions afterwards.
And then: Louis. The warm forest green of his presence (which had been there, but muted, carefully controlled, and in the wake of Luffy and Usopp's disappearances, of course Koby hadn't pushed beyond a tertiary check-in), laced with something, something aching.
The message is -- alarming, yes, but less so than it would've been if Koby hadn't sought Lestat out. Still, he's worried, uneasy, reaching out mentally as well as in the reply text:]
[The door cracks open a little more and the hurt bleeds through, radiates, pulses like a heart. Koby can feel it as if it's his own, for a moment, catching his breath at it's intensity, pressing a hand reflexively to his chest. It's impossible to mistake as anything but genuine, no attempt at deflection or veiling.]
I'm sorry. I don't That shouldn't have happened. You didn't deserve that.
[Whatever sins, whatever deaths are on Louis's hands, directly or indirectly, whatever guilt he carries, he didn't deserve the pain he feels in that instant.]
You're safe? With Lestat? I know he cares about you a lot, and I know there's a history there, but If you're safe, that's all I care about.

I was lied to for a very long time.
Maybe I knew it, deep down. Maybe I didn't.
It changes everything.

There's history here, but I think I'm seeing things clearer than I did before.
In fact I know I am.
You can trust Lestat.

That's good.
He seemed pretty honest when I spoke with him.
I mean, when I threatened him that I'd never forgive him if he did anything to hurt you. [No shame; he's proud to have done it, okay.]

I won't let him.
Not going to let myself hurt him again, either.
