There are these fruits where we're from, called Devilfruit. If you eat them, you get strange powers. Luffy ate one that made him rubbery.
I've sort of noticed that. You have a lot in common. [Like what, Koby. Like what.] Thank you, that's really nice of you. I think he got a little scrambled in the journey, unfortunately. Sanji -- our cook -- keeps threatening to eat it.
We should be. I spent the last few weeks trying to hunt him down, with the rest of my unit and our commanding officer. But when it came down to it, I couldn't. Probably makes me a not very good Marine, but it felt too wrong to try and capture him and the crew.
maybe it makes you a piss poor marine but have you considered that it makes you a good person? sometimes what our commanding officers believe and what we believe won't align. that's when you get to decide the kind of marine you'll be, the kind of person you'll be.
it's what my father did. made the ship what he knew it could be and protected those who needed it, even if they weren't the regent's direct responsibility.
all that aside - a cook. you have a cook? is your whole crew here?
Me? Powers? I don't have any powers. [Well...] I'm just regular. Not a lot of people eat devilfruit, because if you do, you can't swim. Which is a bad idea in a world made of water, you know?
Vice-Admiral Garp said something like that. That every man has to make his own code to follow. It's not as simple as I thought it was when I enlisted, though.
He sounds like Well, like Luffy.
I personally don't have a cook. It's [Not his crew, not technically, but...but they are now.] He cooks for all of us. He's here and our navigator and our swordsman.
i don't know if he's like luffy exactly, but i think my father would like luffy. would like you, and no doubt the others. it's good you have your crew here. better to have your sea family here if the tides change.
[ if they get pulled from here - at least koby will be back on the ocean with a crew. he's not jealous, necessarily, but there's a pang of something he's glad can't been broadcast in text. ]
i will have to meet this cook of yours one day and try his food then. is it better than the food they serve here already?
He sounds like his own man, is what I mean. Not rigidly attached to rules or ideas of what a captain HAS to be, just because that's how it's always been. You think he’d like me? [It’s a little shocking how important that is, the idea that Quentin’s father (beloved, missed, longed for) could meet Koby in all his awkward, too-earnest, too-rambling messiness and like him.] Really?
It's much better. I got so used to eating whatever Alvida left over that I forgot food could taste good. But Sanji's really good at making things even better than this place does.
he'd like you. he liked people who asked questions. who wondered about the world just like he did. i think that's why his wife left him - she couldn't see any value out on the sea. never understood people who planted roots and refused to see the rest of the world.
you don't have that problem.
but that said, i'm glad you have a cook, and that you're out of that old bitch's grasp.
i like the food here, too. the opportunity to try things that would be out of my reach is a pleasant and welcome surprise.
I think I would've liked him too. I can't imagine wanting to stay on land your whole life either. All I've ever wanted is to go to sea.
Me too. It's been nice having them here and in the last place we were stuck. I don't really talk about it much, but I would've died if it weren't for them.
[The insult towards Alvida is an odd thrill -- one Koby almost reflexively corrects, actually looking over his shoulder to see if she's there, somehow.] I am too. It's better, without her. Everything's better.
It feels a little too hard to believe, doesn't it? But you can trust anything Sanji makes, it'll be safe. I'll ask him to make something. For you.

but don't put him out on my behalf - i'm fine with what they server and the jam you brought me. i've left it with some bread for luffy to try.
